$650 Million Deal Sealed: Argentina Chooses Second-Hand F-16s Over China’s JF-17!
The Rivalry Between China’s JF-17 and the U.S. F-16
After more than three years of setbacks, Argentina’s quest to upgrade its air force has reached a conclusion.
On March 26th, Argentine Defense Minister Luis Petri finalized the acquisition of F-16 fighter jets from Denmark, purchasing 24 decommissioned F-16AM aircraft for $300 million.
This effectively sidelines the JF-17 Block3, co-developed by China and Pakistan, from entering the Argentine market.
Offering 24 aged yet reliably maintained F-16AM jets for $300 million — a stark contrast to the $200 million price per new F-16V model — demonstrates serious commitment. These jets, expected to serve for another 15 years after refurbishment, provide a financially viable solution for Argentina, whose air force is currently limited to propeller-driven fighters and urgently needs modern combat capabilities.
Yet, Argentina’s total expenditure doesn’t stop at $300 million paid to Denmark. An additional approximately $350 million must be paid to the U.S. for comprehensive refurbishments, arming the jets, and pilot training, ensuring the F-16s are combat-ready for the Argentine Air Force.
