I am Chinese.
From elementary school, our history textbooks have taught us that the Soviet Union, as our big brother, played a crucial role in helping the Communist Party resist the Japanese invaders and overthrow the Kuomintang’s reactionary rule. The Soviet Union is depicted as the big brother of New China.
But is this really the case?
When people think of the Soviet Union, many immediately picture a straightforward ally who helped us build industry and provided various forms of assistance in the early days of New China’s founding.
The Soviet Union is considered a reliable ally. Overall, it still has a positive image in the minds of most Chinese people.
In reality, our “big brother” once conspired with the United States to create numerous pitfalls for New China, causing instability right from the start.
Danger was everywhere, but fortunately, China had a great leader in Mao Zedong, who helped us navigate through the treacherous waters between the United States and the Soviet Union!
