Is the Moon a Dead Star? Ceased to Exist 2 Billion Years Ago, Yet Why Do Nations Still Persist in Moon Exploration?
To humanity, the Moon is indeed “the most familiar stranger.”
Despite years of study by astronomers, they’ve found that although it continues to orbit the Earth, it is essentially “dead.”
The reason the Moon is considered “the most familiar stranger” is that to this day, humans have not fully understood how the Moon was formed.
Previously, it was speculated that the Moon did not originate within the Solar System but was a satellite captured by Earth.
However, studies of lunar material have shown that many elements in lunar rocks are the same as those on Earth, suggesting that the Moon was born at a location near Earth with respect to the Sun.
The most popular theory now is that the Moon was formed from the debris of a collision between the Theia planet and Earth.
