I’ve Had This Pair of Turtles for Over Ten Years

My pair of turtles are now 10 years old. I bought them as little hatchlings and have been raising them on my balcony ever since. When I bought them at the pet market, I told the seller I wanted one male and one female. He said having two as companions was fine and he couldn’t tell their gender anyway, so I’ve never figured out if they are male or female in all these years!

Turtles are easy to care for. In spring and summer, their active periods, I need to change their water and scrub their shells frequently. In winter, I only need to change the water about once a week and they hardly need any feeding. During hibernation, I don’t disturb them. Occasionally, they move around to bask in the sun, but I leave them alone.

During their active periods, I feed them every day or every other day. Their diet mainly includes fresh lean meat, fish, and shrimp, with some turtle food mixed in occasionally.

When adding water to their tank, make sure the water level doesn’t go above half their bodies. In hot weather, I add a bit more water.

Whenever it’s bath time and I scrub their shells, they always move around and resist because they don’t understand what’s happening.

Since I was young, I have always enjoyed reading biographies of historical figures, especially those about World War II, including documentaries and novels.
