Sweden’s Refugee Crisis: A Nation Wounded
Influx of Refugees Overwhelms Once Happiest Country in the World
In 2022, Stockholm, the capital of Sweden, was rocked by severe riots involving more than 3,000 gang members and locals, which resulted in injuries to over 100 police officers.
Subsequently, Swedish Prime Minister Andersson publicly acknowledged that the refugees admitted over the past two decades failed to integrate into society, which contributed to this tragic event.
A year later, Sweden’s Ministry of the Interior declared the deportation of 60,000 refugees, a number that was increased to 80,000 by early 2024.
Yet, these figures are merely the tip of the iceberg in comparison to the total number of refugees that Sweden has taken in.
From 2003 to 2023, Sweden welcomed over one million refugees, which dramatically increased its “foreign-born population” to 2.09 million, accounting for over a fifth of its total population.
The enthusiasm of Swedes, once evident as they lined the streets to welcome refugees, has significantly waned. Nowadays, they are openly critical of both the refugees and the Swedish government.
