During World War II, many legendary snipers emerged in the Soviet Union. One such sniper was “Vasily” from the movie “Enemy at the Gates,” who was revered by Soviet soldiers and feared by the Germans.
In addition to Vasily, another legendary sniper was Semyon Nomokonov. With his Asian features and pipe always in hand, he killed 368 enemies during his career and received numerous commendations from the Soviet government.
So, what is his story? Let’s delve into it today.
Germany Launched Operation Barbarossa, a Middle-Aged Man Took to the Battlefield to Fight the Germans
Semyon Nomokonov was born in 1900 in the Chita region of Transbaikal. Initially, this area was under Tsarist Russian rule. Later, Chita Oblast and Agin-Buryat Okrug merged to form the Transbaikal Krai.
In the 19th century, the “Decembrists” were exiled to Chita, giving it the nickname “City of Exile.” The harsh environment there cultivated a tough and resilient population.
Nomokonov’s family were descendants of the Tungus people, known as the “Forest People” due to their long residence in the vast forests.
